Ok, peeps, I KNOW there are some super smart people out there who can help me with this. I'va always been alittle fascinated wit the the Vaudun practices, and became even more enthralled after reading so many of Anne Rice's novels, and now I'd like ot know what it's really like. Did Anne hit it pretty much on the mark? (She usually doe) Or is it a bit or totally different? I' having a little trouble finding infor on it on the net, aside from the website The Vodou Page. The Vodou Page is great, chock full of info, but there's no real place for beginners to get started, and it's pretty overwhelming what with all the names, titles, etc. I'm not sure if this is a religion I'll actually practice myself, but I do want to learn much mroe about it. Anyone have any info? Thanks in advance!
Actually, I've never really read any Anne Rice. I love Vampire books, I just never got around to her books.
I have a few friends who are "High Priests" of Voudou. One Mambo (High Priestess of Voudou) and her Houngan (High Priest of Voudou) preformed a large "party" ritual for my entire (23 people) coven a few years ago.
We set up altars for the Lwa we wanted to "invite" and laid out offerings, Cigars, perfume, champagne, rum, etc.
Drummed, danced and sang, until the Mambo and Houngan became possessed in turn. We were visited by Simbi Andezo, Erzulie Freda, and Papa Legba. The party goers were permitted to approach the Lwa and as for a boon, or favor.
It was a beautiful, fun, thrilling evening and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Before the "party" we had a class on Voudou 101. (It lasted about 2-3 hrs.) So we knew how to approach the Lwa, and speak to them.
During the class the Houngan suggested "The Idiot's Guide to Voodoo." as an introduction book with lots of good information. Both Tim and Carolann had been Initated and trained IN HAITI, this was not 'dime store hoodoo'. (Just to clarify.)
If you have any questions, PM me. If I don't know the answer, I'll ask someone who DOES. I can also email you my notes from the Voudou 101 class.
Wow, thank you both so much! I'll check out the links and the book. I went back to the site I mentioned above and did a little more concentrated searching and did find links to the basics of it, and it's really informative. I'm really liking what I'm finding so far.
I will have to check it out when I get home tonight. I went to New Orleans a few years ago.. and I felt like I had been there before.. I felt drawn to the Voodoo museum there and the history there. I actually took the tour through the french quarter all by myself without any fears.. I felt like I had some sort of protection there.
While I've never spent much time on the Vaudun religion, I participated in a ritual involving Erzulie one night... when I went to finally wrap the work up about two months later, I was given a sign that Erzulie isn't finished with me, even though I thought she was. I believe she has kind of adopted me, if that makes sense (you don't pick your Gods, your Gods pick you kind of thing).... Anywho, so now I've been doing my own research into it. :P

i didn't know just anyone could practice voodoo. from what i've read, only catholics can convert to voodoo. "faces in the smoke" has a great chapter about voodoo.
I don't understand that statement... why can only Catholics "convert" to Vaudun?

The fiends...I mean FRIENDS, I have that are Priests of Voudou got their thirds in the Old Guard tradition I was being trained in, and then were free to be Initated into Haitian Voudou. They were never Catholic.
