I was thinking about doing some meditation for myself, but I've never really did anything so can someone explain to me the basics of meditation for starters. Thanks.

Greetings,

What is Meditation?
Meditation means becoming completely aware. This is called "just-know mind." Zen meditation involves making your mind clear just now and just doing what you are doing now, without being carried away or controlled by distracting thoughts. This allows one to make one's life very clear. This style of meditation will naturally lead to a reduction of stress, improved health, and ultimately a state of well-being and centeredness in all life's circumstances.

Love and Blessings

"The Way of the river is flowing down the mountain's side and winding its way through the valley. And the Way of the cat is curling up in a soft and sunny spot. My Way leads me to solitude on the mountain's edge.

Finding your Way is not a difficult task. It is already there before you. You just need to close your eyes and let it be."

Hey there Snake!

I think once you find a way of meditating that works for you, you will find it to be a deeply refreshing and enlightening experience! I first learned of meditation when I was in high school, and made it an almost daily practice for a long time (though I've not been so great about it since starting graduate school). I always found that, for me, the key was to create and environment in which I felt completely at ease and could go undisturbed for at least a half hour. It took some practice for me to figure out that if I wanted scented candles and incense, I had to choose the fragrances carefully and that some fragrances were fine for one meditation (usually depending on my mood at the beginning), while they wouldn't work for another.

Happy exploring!

I was thinking about getting some candles and incense to fullfill my experience through meditation. I haven't tried it out yet, but 2night when I get home from work I think Im gonna sit somewhere in my room maybe the middle of my bed in complete silence and try it out. See how I feel about it and practice the ways of meditation. If anyone has some tips for me let me know. Thanks.

Hey again Snake-

Well first, I'd say don't get frustrated if you find that the first little while that you're meditating, or the first few sessions, you're not able to get to a point of really feeling peaceful. Stress is hard to get rid of, and when you take an opportunity to spend time in silence, you'll probably find that your thoughts start jamming you up and you might not be able to get rid of them and focus on relaxing right away. That's OK. Let the thoughts come, and envision them as you would, say, a bunch of birds or butterflies that approach you and want to light on your finger (the thoughts approaching and wanting to stick). Let it stick for awhile, but then gently let it go and let the next one come. Don't expect that you'll be able to just shut right on down.

Once you've gotten to where you're not being bombarded, you might try a technique that I actually read in a book on how to induce out-of-body experiences. I haven't been able to induce any, but I found the relaxation technique to be great! You can use it either sitting or lying down- with your eyes closed, imagine a big ball of silvery-white, peaceful light out in front of you (or above you, if you're lying down). Imagine drawing a bit of that light in through your nose and mouth and breathe it in deeply- feel it fill your lungs, still leaving its peaceful and positive energy when you breathe out. Then imagine radiating that peaceful and positive light throughout the rest of your body- concentrate on guiding it throughout your torso, your limbs, out to the very tips of your fingers and toes and ears until you are so full of the peaceful light that you are now emitting it.

Nice technique with the positive peacfull light. I like that, but while I was at work I was thinking about maybe being up with the stars and stuff, somewhere relaxing and peacefull. The only problem I would have is all the thoughts running through my mind constantly, it almost feels like I wouldn't be able to concentrat on the relaxation of the mind. But I'll see what happens.
