Its funny how many times I've heard the word empathy but yet never thought about empathy in the way its presented on these sites. I'm posting a link I found and one from Wikipedia. I'm just curious if you have any thoughts on this. I have a feeling quite a few people on this board can relate. I sure can and so can my family.
Empathy is a bitch. It takes years to control, if you find you can control it, and even when you think you've fine-tuned it to a T, it still spikes uncontrollably every so often and hits you like a freight train and knocks you off-balance for a while. It's one of the main reasons I don't really have a great sense of self; too many other people's crap got under my skin and never really left.

I know what you mean about the freight train. I doubt its something I would ever understand enough to be able to control, but it does explain why I have had certain reactions to certain people. It somehow makes alot of sense in a place where in the past few years it hasn't.
Thanks for posting this I know I will read it & I agree being an empath is rough and then some, just when I thought I have it under control it smacks me

Yes it is rough to be an Empath but you can learn to control it. You just have visualize a big wall before you leave your home. And with a bit of practice you can block it completely or just parts of it.

And as you get better at it, you can change your "wall" to include mirrors, or fog or mazes to confuse the energy as well.

Thats totally right. And you can put a lot of little windows in the wall to select one person that you want to help or understand better.
It's a slow process controlling empathy. Like with most things you need to work at it. But of course, even then, it can still bite you in the ass when you least expect it.
P.S. Soulpoet, I like your avatar. I have that exact same pentacle around my neck every day. Only difference is, I have a purple stone in mine, rather than blue in that pic .

I'll have to PM you, I know I have some books on the subject, but their titles are escaping me at the moment.

Mine looks exactly like my Avatar thats why i picked it. And i am a Solitary Wiccan so it fits perfect.
