it sounds as if it's just one person discriminating against the girl's faith - not the company as a whole. any updates? has B&BW offered amends?

A search on Google News doesn't show anything but yeah, I don't agree with the boycott. The woman had no problem getting her time off for the years leading up to the incident. It was just one ignorant manager that did it. I'm pretty sure that B&BW are looking in to it and will take the right steps to make things right. They seem like a reasonable enough company in other markets.

Since BBW wants to act this way, I say we take our business to LUSH. They're fresh, handmade (by REAL people, who put their picture on whatever they make). 100% of their products are Vegetarian, 74% are Vegan and NEVER tested on animals. Neither are their ingredients. Unlike BBW who only claims that their "finished products" aren't tested on animals.

Plus? They're pagan and pagan friendly. One of the "top brass" is Wiccan and Products like "Wiccy Magic Muscles", Jingle Spells, Magic, Witch Ball, Ceridwen's Cauldron, really show their love for the magical.

No. Every email that is sent to BBW gets the same response.

Was planning to drop in with a silly -- "I'll boycott bathing in general" thing... BUT...

If the company wasn't supporting the ignorant manager there would be no lawsuit. If it were the company's position that the manager's statement/position were wrong, the manager would have been disciplined. If they were SERIOUS about the non-discrimination thing the manager would be fired.

I'm guessing that the victim contacted higher levels of management to state her disgust about this. Whether she did or not, her attorney certainly did. If the company wanted to do right, they would have re-instated or paid her off quietly. Instead, they're riding it out with two benefits:
1) clear message to their employees "Don't mess with Mama Company"
2) popping their name into the public eye. While boycotters will respond by not shopping, the average joe will be advertised to by simnply hearing/seeing the company name repeatedly. (Oh, and boycotters will multiply the effect by telling their friends!) Name recognition is a POWERFUL thing. Unless the negative is REALLY strong, it will drop away leaving just the name in the conscience. If it's a name we know, it's a brand we must trust...

Besides -- there are a lot of Americans who still go in for an ol' fashioned witch burning.

p.s. Prolly the only TRUE thing in the company's e-mail response is "However, we can not comment on pending litigation." YUP they can't comment on something pending litigation... Seems that they're not so inclined to make litigation not happen.

p.p.s. The last paragraph of the e-mail response isn't a harmless nicety -- it's resaling -- a writing strategy used to let the end of the reading experience be positive towards the company. (Seriously -- how can you not like someone who tells you WHEN AND WHERE they're there to HELP you.) The reason they (and everyone else) use this is because it works.

I'm still not so quick to jump on the boycott bandwagon. Investigations take time. This just happened, what, 2 weeks ago? At most? The company has to look at both sides of the story, because I'm *sure* the offending manager has a completely different story so the company has to dig into both employees' backgrounds to see if there's any kind of a history of actions like that happening before.

Then, there's also the possibility that the chick was actually fired for something else but chose to make this story up. I mean, I know we like to believe that all Pagans are honest people that are always persecuted against for our beliefs but the truth is, there are dishonest people out there in all walks of life.

And I'm, by no means, saying the woman deserved it or anything, just saying there's always the possibility and all we have is one side of the story.

I was once fired from a job for what I believed to be my beliefs, though my boss was careful to "find" another reason to fire me... this reason being they were supposedly closing my department so no longer needed me. They told me that everyone else in my department was also being let go. Come my unemployment hearing, I find out that not only did they not close the department but I was the ONLY one let go and they put no reason at all in my files. I won my unemployment case but it took 3 months to get there.

Not quite comparable but just an example of how long it can take things to happen. Now, if 3 months down the road we find out the offending manager still has their position and the company hasn't done anything about it, THEN I will boycott (not that I shop there anyway) but I like to at least give them time enough to do something about it, first.

I'm with you on the why bother boycotting thing... (I don't shop there either...)

HOWEVER the firing happened in 08. EEOC Complaint filed in Feb 09. This has been swirling for a year.

Also the "new manger" thing does reek of housecleaning. Frequently the first order of business for a newly hired manager is to remove old thorns in the company's side. Call it a right of passage.

Right on that the firing could be for any reason -- still VERY sad to have the religion card play into it. It's interesting that papers get filed 2 weeeks before Halloween -- could be plaintif's attorney playing on pro-witch heartstrings or just coincedence.

In the big picture, I see it that the company is more concerned about loosing the argument/case than about appearing anti-Wiccan. I hold firm to the idea that if they wanted to see this go away, it would have never hit the news.

in any case
SAD SAD SAD SAD SAD!

Ya know, I hadn't even noticed the '08 date. My apologies. Obviously, it still hasn't been taken care of... then again, they waited nearly a year to file any complaint so the time delay still stands, in my opinion.

In any case, this seems like a very fishy story, no matter which way you look at it.

Though, I do like the giant rubber ducky I saw at B&BW. I wish it had been for sale... it was HUGE!
