a friend feels his ex has sent some negativity his way via spells or vibes. whatever the case, he can't seem to get out from under it so would ya'll please post advice on how to deflect negative spells and/or vibes?

Negativity and negative magick only has as much power over us as we allow it. All he has to do is realize that the ex has no power over him. It's really just that simple.

This. As long as he does not allow it to affect him, it will not. Strength of will. Don't give in to anyone else's will.

ok here are a few options. One, block the ex with magical means. two, confront that person and settle the differences (not get back together just make peace) 3, Use an identification type spell to figure out what it is that is being sent (i.e. energy, hex or curse) and then deal with it as necessary. there are other means of dealing with this but remember not to send negative energy or a curse in return. The law of 3 fold always applies.
