I just started learning this song on guitar. I even started to record a cover of this. It's a bit sloppy at the moment but I'm planning on fixing that when I have more time.
No, I don't. I suppose I could with what I have, but it is so poor that it is not worth trying. I would need some equipment and software, and more importantly, time.
Over the summer I listened to the bass master track of Orion, and Battery (as well as a few others) and am currently once again in the process of learning them the right way. How that man could get up and play a full live show with songs like that and playing like he did is beyond me!
I have the MIDI drum track of "Orion" and I'm recording over that. I'm actually trying to make it my own with my own style. I may even add some piano into it as well. If you ever get time to get situated with recording and need some advice or whatever just let me know. I'm not a pro when it comes to some software and stuff but I know the basics.
Cliff just amazes me every time I hear his bass lines. When I first heard "Orion" I had no idea that one riff (just before the 2 minute mark) was the bass. Sounds so much like a guitar. Whatever effect he used there makes it awesome! But to be honest, Metallica as a band just amazes me with how precise and fast they can play their instruments. Wish I could play like them, haha.
The effect is the original big muff Pi guitar distortion (on top of the fact that Cliff's bass and amp setup was already naturally very over driven.) The thing that gets me the most is the bass solo. Never would I ever have guessed it was a bass solo had I not started learning bass and found out!
