i'm asking what ya'll think about it. we don't have dish or cable so we don't watch the news and our local paper is all about billy bob jr. jr. jr. jr.'s first deer kill. the only way i learn of big news is either here or through friends who talk about it. why bomb the moon? what would the gain be? don't they fear harming our solar system?

Some scientific gain actually happened as NASA assures us. They could not harm the solar system even if they wanted to - not enough resources. They were searching for water there in the form of ice. It was supposed to reveal itself in a huge plum of debris, like miles high. Only that huge plum didn't happen. It was a lot of noise over nothing, nothing at all was visible. NASA insists that it was a success, even though they are still puzzled over the resulting data. Google for more details

I think in NASA's case, they refer to things as a success if they complete the mission. In this case, the mission was to send a bomb to the moon and hit the south pole with it. They did that without issue so the mission was a success. The fact that they overestimated the plume of debris and the ability to see anything useful doesn't really count.
I'm just confused why they don't send another manned mission there. It's not like we've never done it before and our technology hasn't advanced at all.
Also, yay space!
