A teen has been shot in the Osgoode subway station.
The 19-year-old victim underwent surgery at St. Michael's Hospital and is expected to survive the city's latest brazen display of gun violence.
Toronto Police Supt. Hugh Ferguson said a group of young men got off a southbound train at 10:47 a.m. and were arguing. The fight is believed to have started on the train and then spilled onto platform.
"During the course of the dispute, a number of shots were fired. We have one male who has been hit," he said.
Heavily armed tactical officers scoured the subway tunnel and surrounding area for suspects and evidence.
Emergency Task Force officers and two canine units were sent into the subway.
The firearm has not been recovered.
While others fled the scene, one woman stopped to help, trying to stem the flow of blood from the victim's wounds.
Ferguson said the victim, who is known to police, was shot in the abdomen and in the thigh. He said the gunman is described as black, 6-foot-1 and heavy set. He wore a fur-trimmed black parka and a hat with the new Blue Jays logo.
Ferguson said witnesses saw the dispute as the suspect and victim exited the subway. The argument continued onto the mezzanine level and witnesses told police they heard a number of shots.
Ferguson said there were at least three shots.
Police found 9mm casings at the scene.
