"GODSMACK has begun work on the material for the band's follow-up to 2006's "IV" which debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 chart.
Artisan News Service caught up with GODSMACK frontman Sully Erna to get his thoughts on the direction the new album is taking.
"It's gonna be really heavy," he said. "I mean, it's very aggressive. I'm not really sure; it's very premature right now. Right now we just finished one track for the Crüe Fest this Summer. But as far as the whole record goes, I think it's going to be a lot more in your face. I don't think there's going to be any 'Voodoo's or 'Serenity's on this one. We decided to go balls out!"

GODSMACK is part of the lineup for MÖTLEY CRÜE's Crüe Fest 2 tour, which will also include THEORY OF A DEADMAN, DROWNING POOL, and new act CHARM CITY DEVILS.
In late 2007, the band released a greatest hits collection called "Good Times, Bad Times - Ten Years of Godsmack" and announced that it was going on hiatus. Erna worked on his solo album during this period, while the other three members of the group started a side project called ANOTHER ANIMAL.
Erna recently completed work on his first solo album, although he has yet to reveal a title or release date for the disc. "
I check in more often now. I got sucked up into the world of being a musician which consumed all my time, but i left that for school, so i've been quite the busy body for a while.
I miss all the warm hearted smackers here, i can't ever leave this place for good.

Ok, stop right there. Just about every band says that about their new material and most of the time they end up being full of sh*t. I'm hoping for a winner but Faceless, The Other Side and IV were subpar. Faceless and IV had a couple of decent songs but the rest of them were fillers.

I hope what Sully says is true...I so long for their heavier stuff again. I got to agree w/ St. ANger on this one although Faceless did give us Realigned and Make Me Believe
Although I like everything Godsmack has put out, I do tend to lean toward the heavier stuff, like in the album Awake. Don't get me wrong, all their stuff is amazing, I was still impressed with the slower-paced IV (and it helped me through some rough times). Heavier or not, I will very much enjoy the next album because it's Godsmack, how could they fail us right now?

It's almost becomes a prerequisite to say it. Then watch out for the result. I wish the tradition was dropped. What's the point to set expectations of heavy and aggressive and then produce IV (which I love dearly, but it's anything but heavy as was promoted at early recording stages)?

Music is an inspiration, it's moody (in a good way of course), it's emotional in so many ways, and it can make the artist change expectations about it quickly.
So when one band says "Our next album is gonna be aggressively heavy" that's what they want/expect before the recording process begins. Even though the final results end up becoming something more, even if it's not heavy like the way YOU expected it to be.
