Hi there, wave
First of all I have to say I'm a big fan of Godsmack, as everyone here is I guess

The reason why I joined the forum is this:
For school we have to do an assignment 'what do I want on my Ipod'
Simple: every godsmack song Wink
We had to choose one song and give info about the band, people (and the teacher Devil ) are allowed to ask questions later.
I decided to pick as song 'Greed', not especially because it's my favourite but more because I can start brabling about greedy people in the economical crisis etc.
However our teacher expects us to fully explain the lyrics.
I know the wiki explanation: A guy lent money to Godsmack, Godsmack paid it back, then the guy said he owned 10% of Godsmack.
But that's not a full explanation of the lyrics.
Now the lyrics I don't quite know what they mean are these:

"I knew when an angel whispered into my ear,
You gotta get him away.
Hey little bitch! Be glad you finally walked away or
you may have not lived another day."

Is it just another expression of Sully being anti-religion? Like in bad religion. I can't quite explain the last two lines then...

"Hard to find how I feel, please someone help me.
Hard to find how I feel, controlling me every step of the way."

Hard to find how I feel points out he used to be friend, now foe?
But why does he say "please someone help me" and that he gets controlled?

"Hard to find the time"

Don't know quite how to explain that one either :P

Sorry for the many questions but we really have to explain every line in the song.

Thx in advance,
Kinshejsi

Welcome! Welcome to the boards!

Here's the thing about lyrics, anyone can apply them to their personal life and find their own meaning. And while they can certainly speculate about what Sully meant, the only one who can explain "every line" would be Sully himself. I think that's a bit unrealistic for your teacher to expect you to do so.

Have you read Sully's book "The Paths We Choose"? If you don't have it, go to a book store and read Chapter 22 "Greedy Little Baby!"...that's where he explains how the guy (Eric) put the screws to the band. But obviously, he doesn't detail every part of the song.

Let me ask you this...is it possible the teacher wants to you explain what the lines mean to YOU?

"If only you could have seen, how f**ked up my life used to be..."

I think you've missed the mark there...the "angel" says this guy has got to go away..."hey little bitch" is what Sully expresses to the guy, not the angel.

At least that's why I get from it...

Now my memory may not be serving me well here. But the line

"I knew when an angel whispered into my ear"

Wasn't there a woman involved with this story who gave Sully some sort of advice telling him that he gotta get away from Eric? So Sully is using "angel" for his friend if that is the case?

As for religion, I don't think this song has anything being related to religion.

Thx for your replies

Our teacher isn't quite simple, every time someone presents a song, she says that their explanation isn't the essential meaning of the song and she makes her own explanation that she thinks is the right Unamused
I, like you, think that music is like a piece of art and can be interpreted in different ways.

English ain't my mother language, I always thought bitch was female so I linked it to the angel.

Anyway I thought a bit about the lyrics and think I can formulate my own interpretation of it for every line Smiler

And that is exactly what you should be doing. I wish you luck, new friend! Big Grin
