Ok, I need some help and Im hoping you guys/girls can help me out. We are probably going to have to buy a new TV very soon, our old one is crapping out on us, but not totally yet. The only thing I know about what we need, our satellite guy said that we would need to get atleast a 1080p (whatever that means) for the HD to really work with our satellite box. Now, as for the brand, what the 60Hz means, Im at a loss. Any suggestions on TV's?

Whats happening is when we go to turn on the TV, the screen is scrunched up into a line across the middle of the screen. We have to wiggle the wires that hook from the satellie box to the TV (at the TV plug in side). We have it split into our bedroom and that picture is always fine, even is the other is messing up. Im thinking it has something to do with the plugs on the TV. If it turns out to be nothing, we are still thinking of purchasing a new one anyways.

I recently bought a 52" Samsung 1080P LCD w/ 120HZ. I did alot of research and read reviews before I bought. As far as quality goes, Samsung is about as good as it gets, imo. The picture is absolutely amazing with blu-rays. My parents have a Vizio 1080P w/ 120 Hz refresh rate and they absolutely love it. It, too, has great picture quality. The speakers aren't the best on it though but that's not really an issue if you're hooking up a surround sounds system. Vizio is a high quality brand without the high price tag.
Those would be my two choices if I were gonna buy another (which i might, lol).

Go take a look at the pictures before you buy. We bought a 32 inch (I think) 720P for the bedroom, and we went with the LG. Definitely had the best looking picture of all the ones they had at Best Buy. Didn't set us back a ton of money either, I think less than $600 on sale.

You'll also have to decide between an LED, LCD or Plasma type TV. The LED is newest and most expensive. They seem to be the best. Those have driven down the prices of the plasmas and the LCD's. I've heard the plasma is better for sports like racing/football. The live action seems jerky on some of the LCD's. We bought a 50" Samsung Plasma and are very happy with it. No jerky action sports. If you've got the dough, you might want to get the latest and greatest - LED.

Thank you all for your input. Its nice to have someone else tell you what they think on a big purchase like this.
Wolf - I will try another cable (we have an extra box for the other bedrooms) and see if that is the problem. Thanks and please tell Jason thanks too. As for being for a new TV, so is my hubby.
Trouble/Back - I agree on going to the store to pick one out, Im one of those that has to see for myself. Its like shoes, I have to try them on before I buy them. And, Ive heard good things about LG, and I will definatly look at the Samsungs. I have read A LOT of bad things about the Panasonic, so I will not be going that route.
Smackfan - My husband is a HUGE sports fan, so the whole jerky action would bug him, so I will keep that in mind, I really appreciate it. I would hate to spend tons and not have a great sport experience. A happy hubby is a good hubby

FYI, Circuit City.com is havin a 3 day sale on Toshibas. 40" 1080P LCD for $549 and the 32" is $349. A friend of mine bought a 42" from Bestbuy earlier this yr, and she loves it. It does have a great picture.

lucifer is a happy man. best buy had a 3 years, no interest deal going on so he got a samsung 55' flat screen led, a blu ray player thingie and a stand. he also got a wireless dealio thingie so dude could go on xbox live and we can watch movies straight from netflix. he mentioned my sistahs can get online when they come w/their laptops too. dude is overjoyed cuz he gets our monster mitsubishi big screen (55' as well) in the playroom to game on. best buy will be having the 3 years/no interest thing off and on until cmas if anyone is in the market for electronics.
That's great, Kat. That is one helluva play room that dude has -now its even better for the next Guitar Hero session. Mr. D is on Xbox Live. If dude starts playing Call of Duty, PM his username to us. Now its the new Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 2 that he's playing.

Well IMO, you can easily have a fantastic picture on an LCD TV versus a plasma as well tho. The 1080P is a must. NOT a 1080i. Then the HZ is the refresh rate. 60 HZ is a slower refresh rate then a 120 HZ and will give you the jerky motion on sports games, video games or on action movies, that you were discussing. Plasmas are fantastic clarity and color but sometmes have issues with glare on bright days and/or when installed by a window because of their reflective screens. We went with a Sony 1080p 120hz XBR LCD and have gotten rave reviews from every guest who comes in and sees it on. The color, brightness and clarity are fantastic. -But you can easily spend less on another make/model and still get an awesome viewing experience. Just try and stick with the 1080p, 120HZ factors.
